07/01/2011 Thanks to Spin Magazine for running a feature on HATCH Asheville. Mamie Ruth was honored to be a part of the amazing event.

Big thanks to Spin Magazine for running a feature on HATCH.  HATCH was an amazing event in Asheville, NC that brought designers, artists, musicians, and creative souls together in a learning environment.  There were fashion panels, classes, concerts, networking events, and  a fashion show.  Mamie Ruth was honored to be a part of this spectacular event.  If you look really close you can see the Mamie Ruth dress that was featured in the magazine.  If you recognize that afro, it's because you've seen him modeling Mamie Ruth's new menswear line.  He is the one and only and uber talented musician Andy Frasco.  A badass, if you will.  Check out his music at www.andyfrasco.com.

11:11, Make a wish.

06/11/2011 It's the little things in life that remind you of the big picture. xoxo

"11:11, make a wish" Beth yelled from the back of our Mazda van.  "I wish I was an alligator" she proceeds.  "I wish I had more wishes" was always my response.  We always knew that wishes were just that, wishes, but it was fun nonetheless.  The 11:11 wish making was a tradition that we practiced throughout our childhood and beyond.  As we grew our wishes became dreams that we wished to achieve.  "I wish I could learn fractions", "I wish I could get my ears pierced.", "I wish mom would let me shave my legs."  Wishes that would eventually come true, when the time was right.  In life, we don't get to choose the date and time when our wishes will come true.  We must be patient and let God figure out the details first.
My grandfather was a man who knew this best.  He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) as a young man and was put in a wheelchair.  I'm sure he constantly wished that he could walk or that the disease would be taken from him but he didn't sit around and wallow in pity or self doubt.  He played the hand that life dealt him.  He was a loving father to four vivacious kids, a funeral director, a U.S. Navy World War II Veteran, president of the Louisville Lions Club, a mason, owner of Bargeron Insurance and property rentals, he was a founding member of the Bank of Jefferson County, he was a deacon and former chairman of the board of deacons at Louisville First Baptist Church.  He was elected in 1974 as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives and served for 20 years.  I remember watching him in parades throwing bubble gum from the back of a ritzy convertible and thinking "My papa is a celebrity."
My papa inspires me and constantly reminds me of what I can accomplish when I put God first and believe in myself.   He accomplished so much because he was driven, loving, kind, and didn't let his imperfections hold him back.  My grandfather passed away on November, 11 2007, 11/11.
God has a funny way of keeping us in check and reminding us to keep chasing our dreams.  I see 11:11 at least once a day and now instead of making a silly wish, I take the time to look back and reflect on the life of an amazing man who loved me so much.
Never quit dreaming.
xoxo,
Emily

Designer Love … Bohemian Babe
May 27, 2011

Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing Emily Bargeron, founder of Mamie Ruth. If you haven’t heard of this Savannah, Georgia based designer, you may want to listen up. Here’s how I heard of this delightfully original line. In my home town of Charleston there is an event called the Style Swap. Local stores and designers come together under one roof to discount their merchandise down to next to nothing. I’m serious, I got two vintage pieces for about $30 dollars — like, awesome vintage. Well, walking back from the dressing room, I looked behind me to see a smiling face in a pair of pants that were to die for. So, being the style huntress that I am, I asked her, “Where did you get those pants?” She said, “Oh I made them. My line is right over there.” She pointed me in the right direction, we talked, and I decided they had to be mine. Before the night’s fashion show began, she went to see if the pair the model had on were my size so she could discount them. The next day, I got an email from her saying that she would be in Charleston that weekend and would bring the pants directly to me. And directly to me she brought them!

Emily’s whimsical and bohemian flair is so refreshing. It’s totally comfortable and wearable, and it is indescribably original. Getting her start by playing with her grandmother’s jewels, she realized that “the simplest outfit could be marvelous with the perfect trimmings.” And it is with that aesthetic that she has paved her way in the design world. The girl surely has talent. So, with a healthy dose of fashion inspiration from her nana (where so many of us glean our most elegant taste) it was only appropriate to name the line after this fashion maven … thus, it was dubbed Mamie Ruth.

So, we salute Emily and all of her accomplishments. We can’t wait until her designs are flooding all boutiques and she’s gracing the pages of national magazines. We’ll say we knew her when.

It was such an honor and a pleasure meeting Charleston Fashion Week judge and 'Mad Men' costume designer Janie Bryant.  Not only is she beautiful, sweet, and full of southern charm, she is also extremely talented!  Janie is an author, fashion designer, and an emmy winning costume designer.  Janie Bryant is playing a huge role in bringing vintage (and vintage-inspired) pieces to contemporary clothing.  Janie attended CFW this year as a judge and loved the Mamie Ruth necklace that Ayoka Lucas was wearing and had to have one.  Ayoka introduced me to the style maven and I immediately wanted her to have some Mamie Ruth designs of her own.  I hand delivered a gift bag brimming with Mamie Ruth clothing and accessories to her hotel.  She loved the feather earrings that were included in the gift bag and rocked two sepereate earrings together that created a dramatic look that was perfect for the final gala.  Bryant recently tweeted "Have to tweet about my new favorite accessories designer http://www.mamieruth.com seriously in love." Janie Bryant is such a wonderful inspiration for all southern women who dream to make it in the fashion industry.  Thank you Janie for reminding me to never quit dreaming.

GSU alum takes on the fashion world.

02/22/2011 "GSU alum takes on the fashion world" - an article from the GSU newspaper the "George-Ann"

Emily Bargeron, Georgia Southern University alumna and the creator behind Mamie Ruth Designs, has been promoting good style since a very early age.
“I found my first fashion icon at the age of eight. The colorful Punky Brewster inspired my wardrobe through my elementary school years,” she said, referencing the 1980s sitcom of the same name. “I was always making outfits for my Barbies and adding new things to my own outfits.”
Long before her arrival at GSU, the 2006 graduate had already left a fashionable mark on her tiny hometown of Louisville, Ga. Then known as “Bubbetty,” her company specialized in handmade pocketbooks and jewelry.
“I have been making jewelry since I was 14 years old,” said Bargeron.
12 years later, the fledgling Bubbetty has evolved into Mamie Ruth, and Bargeron’s collection not only includes jewelry, but clothing as well.
“I majored in fashion design at Georgia Southern. I knew that it was the field that I belonged in. I did my internship for a designer in Savannah and learned a lot about design from that experience.”
In 2008, Bargeron was asked to create jewelry for a fellow designer’s clothing line, which was being featured in Charleston Fashion Week. The next year, she decided to submit her clothing line for consideration in the event. It wasn’t long before Bargeron’s own creations were seen on South Carolina’s runways.
“When I got the opportunity to showcase my designs at Charleston Fashion Week, I gained exposure that would help me launch my career to the next level,” she said.
Eco-friendliness and awareness are also important to Bargeron. She includes the use of recycled vintage fabrics and jewelry obtained from thrift shops and flea markets in her works, along with environmentally-savvy fabric from beechwood trees. A portion of Mamie Ruth’s profits are given to children’s homes and orphanages throughout Africa.
Mamie Ruth’s designs for spring and summer 2011 feature authentic African prints and tribal fabric. Bargeron says that she enjoys variety.
“You have to constantly keep up with fashion trends while trying to manage the business side of things-marketing, sales, public relations, et cetera. Every day is different. There is no set schedule. One day, I may be traveling and then the next coming up with a new design. It never gets boring and keeps things exciting.”
For GSU students interested in pursuing a career in fashion, Bargeron offers a piece of advice.
“Don’t give up. It is a tough industry, but if it’s what you want, you will succeed. It takes a lot of work, a lot of time, and a lot of dedication. You must have the drive to get you through each day. Things aren’t always flowing at the speed of light, but there is always a new idea or design out there to be discovered.”

Mamie Ruth gives back

01/25/2011 A percentage of all Mamie Ruth sales helps orphans in Africa. Look Good, Do Good, Shop Mamie Ruth.

I am only one, but I am still one.  I cannot do everything but I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. - Edmund Everett Hale

As I polish off a hearty bowl of Wheaties this morning it reminds me of how lucky I am to have a warm bed, a roof over my head, and food in my pantry.  There are millions of children world wide that are hungry this morning.  The world is so big and we are so small, how can I make a difference?  I came across this quote a while back and I jotted in down in a journal.  We are one, but if a lot of ones combined forces we can change this big bad world into a beautiful compassionate place.  When you shop with Mamie Ruth you are helping to make this world a little bit better.  A portion of all sales benefits two orphanages in Africa.  Mamie Ruth also purchases authentic African tribal printed fabrics from the African communities. Your purchase not only gives African children and women a chance to succeed but also stimulates the African community and allows people to continue to make a living creating their traditional crafts.  Let's make this world a better place one fashionista at a time. Look good, Do good, Shop Mamie Ruth.

CFW memories… tear

01/18/2011 Mamie Ruth CFW 2009

As the Charleston Fashion Week legacy grows with yet another year of stilettos, Summer styles, and sick beats... it takes me back to my younger years as a CFW emerging designer. Many sleepless nights and countless stressful days while scrambling to compose my first full collection.   I have CFW to thank for putting the fire under me as a designer.  It has been 2 years since my debut under the tents at Marion Square.  I have matured as an individual as well as a designer.  The magic of Mamie has only begun.....

Mamie Ruth’s vintage Christmas tree

12/15/2010 You don't need hand strung popcorn or fancy ornaments to have a very special Christmas tree.

I'm not exactly Susie homemaker and there's not a Martha Stewart bone in my body but I think I did a fabulous job on my very first "big girl" Christmas tree.  I don't have Lenox ornaments and my friends don't exactly swap ornaments on the reg so I had to work with what I had.  I pulled out my 17 tackle boxes filled to the brim with chains, pearls, antique sterling silver spoons and forks (my favorite addition to the tree), vintage cameos, and watch faces galore.  The result, a very Mamie Christmas tree perched upon a collection of vintage trunks and old suitcases.  Have a very Mamie Christmas!!  xoxo

One man’s (or woman) junk is another man’s treasure

12/15/2010 Grangma's vintage earrings transform into a beautiful bracelet and awesome Christmas present.

Are your grandma's vintage baubles and vintage earrings lying around your vanity? They are special to you but you have no idea what to do with them??  Transform them into a beautiful, one of a kind bracelet or necklace.  These three bracelets are a custom order for a client who is giving them to her three daughters for Christmas.  The earrings are the girls' grandmothers.  A perfect way to hold on to a special memory.  Gotta love that Mamie charm!!

Mamie & Me

12/09/2010 Mamie Ruth designer Emily Bargeron poses with the original Mamie Ruth.

Mamie Ruth

My braces and bifocals were hardly high fashion,
Until the day my Mamie helped me discover my passion.
She laid before me, like a chest full of treasure,
Bright baubles and bangles all for my pleasure.
Clip-on’s and broaches, fancy pins and pearls,
On this summer day my tangles were turned into curls.
At barely four feet, there sat a designer,
My bifocaled eyes saw a world of things finer.
I grew like a weed and my dream did the same,
Longing and lusting of a life of fashion and fame.
Today my dream hangs around Mamie Ruth’s neck,
In silver and gold and a bushel and a peck.

She is a southern splendor, a natural charmer, and
a hell of a cook.  Mamie Ruth is my grandmother.
Watching her I realized that even the simplest outfit
could be marvelous with the perfect accessories.

Fashion Insights from a fashion insider

11/30/2010 Thanks www.ilikewhatyourewearingcharleston.com for an awesome interview!

What is your name and your involvement in the fashion industry?
Emily Bargeron - Mamie Ruth designer - www.mamieruth.com

Which trend/ trends are you most excited about this upcoming season?
I love Aztec printed ponchos, over-the-knee socks with studded platform clogs, suede and leather anything, tons of cuff bracelets on both arms....

Is there a good way to incorporate the style/styles you mentioned in question two?
Ponchos are fab when paired with jeans or dresses you already have in your closet. I think over-the-knee socks are the new legging. They are my ultimate accessory this season because they are easily incorporated into your everyday wardrobe. Pair them with heels and a mini for a night out, or boots and shorts for a super trendy day look. I personally think that leather cuff bracelets can never be over-done. The more the merrier. Tis' the season. Aye?

What are some of the most common mistakes people make regarding fashion and style?
Not taking chances with fashion. People tend to care what other people think too much. If YOU like it, rock the hell out of it.

What must you have and can't live without?
Clothing? My running gear - keeps me sane.
Accessory? An emerald ring that my grandma (Mamie Ruth) gave me when I turned 16. I never take it off.
Food? Breakfast / coffee
In general? Social Networking (So sad, yet, so true.)

What is your fashion motto or style guideline for yourself while shopping or deciding what to wear?
My friends say my motto is "One size fits Emily" because no matter what size something is, if I like it, I buy it and make it into something that works for me. I also have a dressing room dance. If I try on something that I ABSOLUTELY adore, I subconsciously do a little shimmy in the dressing room or in front of my mirror. That's when I know it's a winner.

Do you have fashion tips for our male readers?
1. Leave the vulgar graphic tees on the shelf. No, I do not want to meet your "little friend," nor do I want to tickle your Elmo. Thanks.
2. Everything is fine in moderation BUT you can O.D. on Lacoste, Polo, Sperry, Vinyard Vines, etc. Throw some vintage into your wardrobe. Think pearl button western shirts, deep v-neck tees, chunky cords....
3. Don't worry about what "your boys" will think.
4. Read GQ.

As someone in the fashion industry, what advice would you give to those who aspire to also work in the industry?
"Don't be the traveler that dies of thirst when the palms of the oasis are in sight" - Don't give up.

Also, don't forget to eat. Whether you want to be a model, designer, photographer, etc.,  you won't accomplish anything if you aren't getting enough nutrients. Just call me mom, but passing out is incredibly unflattering.

What do you look for in accessories and shoes?
I like Western- and Indian-inspired accessories. I have a gold vintage bull horn necklace that I wear often. I have also been racking up on Indian beaded accessories, and I actually found a few of my favorites at a costume store this Halloween. I love the hippie headband. It's perfect for bad hair days, just watch out for mushroom hair. Not a good look.
In shoes, I look for height, comfort, and style. I LOVE everything in Jeffery Campbell's collection. Very hippie chic.

Who is your style icon?
I love Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen!! Their style is incredibly effortless chic...sometimes a bit too effortless, but they aren't scared to wear anything, and when they wear it, they ROCK it. They have fun with their wardrobe. They aren't afraid to create new trends. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but they always look like a badass wearing it.

What are you wearing today?
Today I am wearing a Mamie Ruth Aztec print fleece poncho, American Apparel V-neck tee, Lucky Brand jean shorts from ten years ago that I have patched at least 10 times, burgundy over-the-knee socks, and Sam Edelman fringe boots ...... and a smile. xoxo

Marc Jacobs comes to Savannah, Ga

10/20/2010 Designer Marc Jacobs visits the Marc Jacobs store in Savannah!!

Legendary designer Marc Jacobs can hop into his private jet and fly to any destination under the moon.  On October 14th he bypassed the moon and flew strait into Savannah, Ga to sign t-shirts benefiting the Savannah skate park project.  I was one of the first in line to meet the handsome designer hunk.  He was extremely friendly.  All the t-shirt sales went directly to the skate park fund.  While I was on deck I was extremely nervous contemplating what I would say to such a legend..... less than two seconds later (apparently it doesn't take long to scribble a heart and a sloppy version on your name on a t-shirt ).  I mumbled "I am aspiring to be a fashion designer and I love your digs."  He said "thanks,  good luck."  Though it wasn't much, it was everything.  There aren't many emerging designers that get the opportunity to meet such an established and talented designer.  I am honored that I got to meet (kinda) Marc Jacobs and I am hoping that some of his talent rubbed off on me.
